The Paradox of Wealth: A Thought-Provoking Tale of Spirituality Story Line

A devotee was doing penance thinking of God.

After many days, God appeared before him.

Devotee, we appreciate your penance, ask what boon you want.

The devotee felt ecstatic and prostrated before God and asked for a lot of wealth.

God blessed him and said, "Let it be so." He was not seen again for a second.

But he did not get the wealth either. The devotee was confused.

Thinking that he might get it tomorrow, he came out of the house and sat on the porch.

He looked at the street and saw a box lying there.

He did not see anyone in the neighborhood.

He approached the box with surprise.

The devotee opened it and looked.

Inside was all gold, silver and diamond jewelry.

He closed the box tightly. He brought it into the house.

Could this be the wealth that God had spoken about? Hmm, this is probably someone's stolen property.

If I try to sell this and make money, the police will catch me and throw me in.

He was unable to make a clear decision on this matter.

He spent the next day or two wandering around anxiously.

Finally, he decided not to have any trouble and handed over the box to the police.

That evening, when he was meditating, God appeared before him.

Did you receive the box, which contained a lot of wealth? He asked.

Oh, did you send it? The devotee said, "No way."

I gave it to the police. You yourself did not meditate or do penance after getting the box, and you did not even close your eyes for a minute, God laughed.

What is the point of doing penance for months before getting wealth? You could not solve the confusion that arose after getting it.

I beg your pardon, God, what should I do now? God is not there to answer the lamenting devotee.

Zen considers meditation as a way of life.

Otherwise, if you use it as a means to get benefits from God or others, such mishaps are inevitable.
